Description
This is an ORIGINAL example of the increasingly rare first pattern (or "P1937") of the "fatigue" duty jacket which was issued to GI's during the early phase of WWII. According to Charles Lemons" encyclopedic
Uniforms of the US Army Ground Forces 1939-1945
[Volume 4, pages 21-30], these jackets were standardized by the Army on 3 April 1941. This is odd, since the matching 1st Pattern M1937 Pants or "trousers" were standardized on 8 November 1937! There is no explanation for this discrepancy in dates of standardization, other than the possibility that Chuck did not have the initial P1937 jacket in the collection at the Patton Museum of Cavalry and Armor, as it was then known.
Although originally intended as a work or "fatigue" uniform to be worn over the wool or cotton khaki service uniform, the jackets of this and later patterns became the combat uniform of GI's in all theaters of operations. The jacket is made of herringbone twill ("HBT") fabric with eight metal "13-star" buttons (all of which are present), two pleated chest pockets closed with the same metal buttons and a waist band which is adjustable with pull tabs on the sides. The cuffs have an adjustable closure with two of the same metal buttons. The back of the jacket has "bi-swing" pleats or gussets to allow freedom of movement. Although the QM tag in the right pocket is washed out and illegible, the jacket is stamped "42R" in the neck. The jacket has the following actual measurements: Chest (armpit-to-armpit) 22"; Sleeve length (from shoulder seam to cuff) 25.5"; Waistband: 23" across; Shoulder seam-to-seam 19"; and Overall 29" from collar to waistband. The jacket is in VERY GOOD used condition with minor paint spots on the sleeves and some unknown soiling on the left sleeve (see last two images below). The light OD#3 color of the fabric is still strong and is best seen in the non-flash close-up images.
Here's an opportunity for the collector or re-enactor who disdains reproduction uniforms to get an original and increasingly rare jacket for the collection of impression. The buyer will have my usual unconditional guarantee of authenticity and a five-day (
not the 14-days that they insert in my listings without my consent
) right of inspection and return/refund privilege, excluding postage.
